Scaleway Buys Saagie to Build Sovereign AI Data Platform

Scaleway, the cloud arm of French telecom group Iliad, has acquired Saagie, a data pipeline and orchestration platform. The deal is aimed at building what Scaleway calls a fully sovereign data and AI platform, according to Iliad.

Sovereignty is the commercial argument here. European operators face growing pressure to keep sensitive data off US-controlled infrastructure. Scaleway is betting that a vertically integrated stack, compute plus orchestration plus governance, is the product enterprise buyers will pay for. Saagie brings the data workflow layer Scaleway lacked.

Watch whether enterprise buyers in regulated sectors treat sovereign AI as a compliance checkbox or a genuine switching reason. If it is the former, Scaleway competes on price against AWS and Azure. If it is the latter, the integrated stack becomes defensible. The signal is not the acquisition. The signal is whether regulated buyers move contracts.
