Taiwan's Chip Strength Is More Than TSMC, Analysis Argues

Taiwan's semiconductor success rests on far more than TSMC, argues a Global Taiwan Institute analysis. The author counts over 500 firms supporting Nvidia's manufacturing ecosystem, producing more than a million components for advanced AI infrastructure, and notes Taiwan's assembly, testing, and packaging sector holds over half the global market, led by ASE Group as the world's largest independent provider.
This matters because back-end packaging now decides whether complex AI chips work at all. As designs grow harder to assemble, that capability becomes a chokepoint rivals underestimate.
For Taiwan, the lesson is strategic. The clustered ecosystem around Hsinchu, not any single fab, is the asset that competitors cannot quickly reproduce.
